Rugby in the Desert

Katie Garland ’15 represented the Ontario Rugby Union’s Under 18 Jr. Storm team this past week in Las Vegas at the Seven’s Rugby International Tournament. The Central Ontario based U18 team went undefeated throughout the two day tournament to win their 24-team Girls’ High School Division Championship!

The Jr. Storm team defeated elite sides from across North America to earn the Las Vegas Invitational title and dominated in their total 6 games played with 248 points for and only 5 points against. The sole unconverted try being scored against them in the semi-final match against Atlantis Selects I (Northern California). The championship game was played against British Columbia Rugby Union who held ORU Central’s strong offensive threat to 24 points but were unable to score against equally tough defence.

Commenting on the tournament’s play, Head Coach Ian Fitzgerald said, “I have 12 very talented girls with exceptional depth…it makes our job easy when they are so focused –they were actually having “chalk talks”between games, discussing strategy amongst themselves in preparation for upcoming matches.” “They played as a team,” Assistant Coach Vicki Woodheadsaid after the championship victory. “They distributed ball well, stuck to the game structure we set for them, they were very strong defensively showing exceptional poise and discipline”.

The high school U18 division was only a cross section of more than 350 competitive men’s and women’s teams from over 25 countries ranging from high school age to adult. The Canadian national men’s team played against teams from around the globe over the weekend as Las Vegas is part of the men’s international 7’s circuit, which includes Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, USA, Scotland, England, Dubai and Hong Kong.
