Welcoming Wab Kinew

By Dave Krocker

The Grove was very fortunate to have the 2015 Jack Matthews Fellow, Wab Kinew, visit our campus on Thursday, February 26. Wab captivated our staff and students in Chapel with his theme of leadership. He used anecdotal stories of meeting Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama and tribal Chiefs here in Canada to demonstrate leadership really is about empathy, compassion, and inspiring others through strong character values. Wab connected with our students with his natural blend of intellectual and pop culture insights and wit. Our Leadership, Character and Values program along with curriculum primarily in Grade 9 and 10 courses aligned powerfully with Wab's delivery.

In period two, many classes attended to see him again, speaking more about the background and context to Aboriginal, First Nations, Inuit and Metis people. It was informative, powerful and motivating. Our students were thoroughly engaged and from the range of questions at the end it was clear our range of learners all gained something from his presentation. We were fortunate to hear a brief rap from Wab which had the crowd respond with enthusiastic applause.

While themes of reconciliation, treaty rights, aboriginal affairs and residential schools can be dark and often heavy, Wab Kinew was able, as a great speaker, story teller and intellect, to inform and inspire our students in a positive fashion.
