Keep the Ball Rolling

By Megan McShane ’17

On Friday, February 27, six students attended the Independent School Jack Summit, Keep the Ball Rolling, at Branksome Hall in Toronto. The objective of the conference was to introduce the idea of eliminating the ever-present stigma surrounding mental health in Canadian society. Students from every province and territory in Canada tuned in, as we did, to the main Jack Summit at the MaRS Discovery District in downtown Toronto.

I, along with, Juliet Gardner, Lexi Krocker, Ross Ramsay, Meg Hicks and Vandana Narine spent the day learning about how to support those who have struggles with mental health, as well as how to make mental health a less taboo topic by watching live-stream presentations from the Jack Summit and participating in facilitated small group discussions. We spoke about support systems to introduce into our LCS community to support those who have constant mental health struggles as well as those who might simply be having a difficult mental health day. We explored ways to eliminate the stigma around mental health and how to make mental health easier to speak about in a day-to-day conversation. We discussed how to differentiate mental health and mental illness. We learned how to connect mental health to physical health to help society better understand mental health and mental illness.

It was an incredible learning experience—at the end of the day, all of us agreed that we took a lot away from the conference. We’re hoping to put several of these ideas into play this year and next to help erase the stigma around mental health at LCS!
