#LCSDarknessToLight

By Dr. Heather Avery

More than 180 LCS students and staff greeted the dawn at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday morning in support of the CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) Darkness to Light Fundraiser.

The original premise of the Darkness to Light campaign was to have participants stay up all night in support of mental health, but with exams approaching and the benefits of sleep for mental and physical health on our minds, LCS approached the CAMH organizers with a proposal to sleep eight hours for the fundraiser.

Organizers loved the idea, so LCS went to bed at 9:30 p.m. on Friday night, and rose at 5:30 a.m. to take sunrise selfies at the waterfront. In total, students raised more than $4,600 for CAMH, thanks especially to the generous support of an anonymous donor, who pledged $10 to CAMH for every LCS participant. The donor also pledged $10 to LCS Wellness and Happiness Initiatives for every sunrise selfie taken, giving the fledgling student-led Happiness Initiative a much-needed boost of support.

Five houses tied for first place with 100% participation in the event: Cooper, Memorial, Grove, Wadsworth and Upper Colebrook. Each winning house received $400 for house event celebrations!

Two students, Ross Ramsay and Emma Nie, and Alaina Robertson, Service Learning Coordinator, also appeared on CHEX News to talk about our take on the Darkness to Light Fundraiser.
