Grade 10s Give Back

By Vicky Boomgaardt

On Tuesday June 2, Grade 10 students had the privilege of presenting a cheque for $3,300 to Peterborough Youth Services (http://www.pysonline.ca/). The donation represented a year’ work for the Grade 10 students through Lakefield College School’s Leadership, Character, Values Program (LCV).

The LCV pillar for the Grade 10 year is stewardship, helping students learn how to take care of others in their community. Through the LCV program, the Grade 10s this year chose Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO) for their grade wide community service initiative. Throughout the second half of the year, the students worked tirelessly in small groups to design, promote and run a variety of fundraising events, all with the goal of raising money and awareness for CMHO. Events include a winter BBQ, a “Chuck A Puck” contest, two bake sales, a car wash, a coffee house, a colour run and t-shirt sales. Through the process of organizing and implementing these events with their peers, students gained valuable teamwork, collaboration and organizational skills as well as an awareness of the need for, and value of, involved and engaged citizens. Students also learned that leadership is about being part of something greater than any one individual.

When it came time to present their donation, CMHO suggested that the students could donate their fundraising efforts directly to Peterborough Youth Services (PYS), a non-profit, social service counselling agency located in Peterborough, Ontario, thereby keeping the money directly in our community. Jamie Emerson, Executive Director of PYS, and Tracey Murtin, a clinical counsellor at PYS, joined students during their final LCV Grove Time to Lakefield to accept the $3,300 cheque. Jamie shared with students that the mandate of their organization is to “provide counselling and support to young people aged 10 – 18 and their families”. Tracey invited ideas from the students themselves as to where they would like to see their donation to be used and shared some of her experiences working with clients firsthand. For the students, the presentation was a powerful culmination of their Grade 10 LCV experience.

Below are short descriptions of the fundraising events, written by the Grade 10 students themselves.

BBQ:
During the Staff vs. Grad hockey game in February, we organized a barbeque as part of our community service initiative. Although the weather was not in our favour, we had a very successful day raising over $200 for Children’s Mental Health Ontario. Some of the highlights were Ross Hutchison’s stellar hot dog cooking and the great turn out on a snowy afternoon.

Chuck A Puck Contest:
Our Chuck-A-Puck event was held at the end of the Grad vs. Staff Hockey Game in February on the Armstrong shinny rink. The event was successful and overall an enjoyable time for everyone. We raised approximately $80. The winners of the event were Andrew Maltman and Logan Ball. The highlight was getting together as a group and having fun throwing pucks. We learned how to work together as a team to make a fun event.

Bake Sales:
Our group organized two bake sales during lunchtime during April and May. Students and staff contributed baked goods that were purchased and enjoyed by the LCS community. Not only were there lots of tasty baked goods, the events themselves were a fun addition to the day with music, lots of laughter and money going to a good cause.

T-Shirt Sales:
Grade 10 students designed t-shirts with the Children’s Mental Health Logo on them and sold them on several occasions, for both the colour run and Children’s Mental Health Day. On May 21, students had the opportunity to wear their t-shirts to school instead of their uniforms in support of children's mental health. As well people bought them and wore them to the colour run, another event supporting children’s mental health. The t-shirts were a huge success: we sold more than one hundred shirts. A highlight from the t-shirt initiative was informing people that proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts were going to support mental health initiatives and hearing them express their interest in learning more.  Being in this group has raised awareness for all group members about the importance and value of mental health.

Car Wash:
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in May, a group of committed Grade 10 students held a Car Wash in support of CMHO. Staff members, local residents and cottagers driving by had their cars washed and buffed by eager students until they looked like new.  In just 2 short hours, students washed 28 cars, raising over $300 for CMHO.

Coffee House:
The Grade 10 Coffee House group organized an amazing opportunity for the LCS community to come together to enjoy music and performances by Lakefield students on a sunny spring evening in early May. With almost 100 students in attendance, the event was a huge success. Performances included an original song by Jordan Gillis, first time performance by Matthew Lovick, a brother-sister performance by Alex Westcott and Sam Dalton ’14 and a finale by Kevin (Tuna) Limeback.

Colour Run:
More than 80 students participated in a colour run around campus on the evening of Saturday, May 9. As they ran, students had colourful chalk and paint thrown on their bodies. The Grade 10 LCV Colour Run group designed, promoted and organized the run, including crushing chalk in the OE kitchen to create the powder and paint that was used during the event.  As a group, we this event exceeded our expectations; it took a lot of planning to make happen and the event itself was more successful than we had anticipated. It was a well-organized event; there was good music, we raised lots of money and participants and organizers alike had a lot of fun!
