Jr. Girls’ Soccer
Coaches: Danielle Labrosse, Borana Sarcevic
On Friday, April 29, the Jr. Girls’ Soccer team hosted Toronto Montessori School for their second league match. This game was particularly challenging because of the lack of experience of many of the players on the other team. The girls tried their best to keep their positions and were finally able to figure it all out by the second half. Any potential scoring attempts by TMS were quickly thwarted by Anna Rasmus and Pilar Martin. Kathleen Kee, Nikki Cannon, Ella Shanahan-Guay, Julia Martinez, Fallon Dennis and Lily Coates did a great job in the middle. Final result: 2-0 for LCS. Great job ladies!

1st Track and Field
Coaches: Clark Davis, Paige Frigault
The 1st Track and Field team visited Etobicoke's Centennial Stadium on Thursday, April 28 for their second meet of the young season hosted by St. Edmund Campion Secondary.  Despite the chilly spring conditions, the athletes managed to put together a strong collective showing in a deep pool consisting of 47 other schools from across the GTA.  Cameron Maltman tested his mental and physical stamina by taking on the Open Boys 2,000m Steeplechase for the first time, clocking in a time of 8:18.13 - good for 13th place overall.  Wil Brawn also doubled-up on the Senior Boys 400m and 800m races, finishing 6th (55.80) and 8th (2:10.61) overall.  Lizzy McLean had a successful day, finishing 6th (1.30) and 8th overall (16.79) in the Senior Girls High-Jump and Discus Throw.

Janelle Lawes showcased her powerful speed in the Midget Girls 80m Hurdles and 100m Dash, finishing 3rd (14.71) and 6th overall (13.84).  Meanwhile, Stuart Gerus put together a strong effort in the Junior Boys High Jump - finishing 6th overall with a height of 1.45m.  The coaching staff were very impressed with their athletes in the tough, cool conditions..

1st Girls’ Rugby
Coaches: Natasha Turner, Stephanie Kruzich
The 1st Girls' Rugby team's their first regular season game this week! The girls have been training very hard in preparation for this game and were excited to take to the field at home to kick off their season. Half of LCS' team is new to rugby, so it was particularly exciting for them to have their very first league game of rugby ever! Greenwood College came at us hard from the beginning with powerful runners and strong rucking skills. LCS rallied, and bore up well against the onslaught, particularly with our scrums and line outs where the girls were dominant. Greenwood came out on top 35-5, however LCS had some excellent moments in the game, including strong runs by outside centre Hanan Hammoud, and great tackles by Maggie Thompson. Elena Martinez-Sanchez was LCS's lone try scorer off of a great team effort to get the ball to the wing, and then an excellent individual effort by Elena to run the ball into the try zone. Overall the girls played with spirit and determination and made their coaches very proud! Good job ladies!

1st Boys’ Rugby - A Side
Coaches: Peter Andras, Zach Barr
The 1st Boys A-Side 7's Rugby team played in a tri-meet at Ridley College in St. Catherines, and celebrated a 3-0 record on the day. They opened up play against Hillfield Strathallan College, and played to a 35-5 win. Rolling on their momentum, the boys played the host Ridley College, and sailed to a 29-7 victory. It was during their last game against Royal St. George’s College that the boys sealed the perfect record with a 25-5 win. Much energy was left on the field, and much happiness was taken away from their success. The boys will meet the same teams next week at HSC for their weekly rematch.

1st Boys’ Rugby - B Side
Coaches: Peter Andras, Zach Barr
The 1st Boys’ B-Side Rugby team travelled all the way to Hillfield Strathallan College on Wednesday to face three of the teams in our league. The boys played very well under exceptional conditions. The team faced Country Day School in their first match and controlled the play the entire game. LCS was up 14 quickly in the game. Tobi Omole outflanked the entire CDS team to score first, then Matt Lovick followed it up and converted both Trys. Russel Henlin and Adrien Mindjimba scored twice more to put the final to 24-7. In the second game the boys fought hard and held Greenwood in a tight defensive match. Greenwood pushed hard and capitalized a couple of unfortunate errors giving them the advantage. We lost 14-7 with Daniel Pazos scoring the only try against GCS, converted again by Matt Lovick. The boys then put on an awesome full team effort against the home team winning HSC 38-0. Scoring for LCS - Daniel Pazos, Matt Lovick (2), Ernst VonPuttkamer, Phil Carr-Harris and Ross Ramsay all crossing the Try line and Matt followed up with 4 converts.

1st Ultimate
Coaches: Todd Melville, Mary Elizabeth Konrad
The 1st Ultimate team travelled to Toronto on Wednesday to play a combined Crescent/Havergal team in league play.  In windy conditions at Cherry Beach Park, LCS used strong defensive play and big hucks to take half 8-4."Havercrest" clawed back in the second half, but were stymied by the LCS zone defense time and again.  LCS went on to win the game 14-8.  Defensive standouts for Lakefield were Adam Stainrod, Ben Kotsef, and Clara Zhang while the offense was led by Keith Forsythe, Rupert French, Chris Moody, and Juliette Polito. The team continues their season next week with a tournament in Peterborough May 10 and a home game on May 11.

1st Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Sarah Thompson, Sam Wilson, Katrina Brennan, Derek Doucet
On Wednesday, the 1st Boys’ Tennis team travelled to Upper Canada College to face off against Greenwood College and UCC. In our first match against Greenwood, Ben and Tom Dalhler started as First and Second Singles and Alex Kam in Third Singles. Bennie Leuders and Louis Sirois played First Doubles and Dorian Piret and AB Salah played Second Doubles.

We had a clean sweep, winning 5-0 against Greenwood! Although we came out on top, there were some very tough fought games, and it made for very exciting tennis to watch. In Ben’s game, they were back and forth until it finally came down to the tiebreaker where he was able to pull away to win it 7-4! Tom had a bigger gap in the score, but there were some incredible rallies where Tom was setting up his points beautifully. Tom won 8-3.  Alex started off really strong, but then his opponent climbed back to catch him, which started to really throw off Alex’s game. However, Alex didn’t give up and after a long battle, he finally came out on top winning in the tiebreak, 7-5! Our doubles teams also had some really exciting matches. Dorian and Abdulla were very aggressive at net, putting away shot after shot to win 8-4. Bennie and Louis took a little while to find their stride but were able to come out with clean win at 8-6.

Our second match was against UCC who are notoriously strong and competitive, and are currently undefeated in the league. The games we had against them were real nail-biters! Our boys fought hard and played exceptionally well. Unfortunately, we lost 4-1 with Alex Kam being our only win in Third Singles. Alex played an aggressive game and used his strengths in power and precision to come out on top! Bennie and Louis, although they were defeated, actually found they played better against UCC, working really well as a unit. Dorian and AB couldn’t quite get their rhythm back, and the Dahler boys both had really tough losses, but had a lot of fun playing because of the high quality of players.

We saw so much improvement from last week’s games to this week’s, and we look forward to continuing this forward momentum as we take on SAC, TFS and Crescent next week!

Jr. Boys’ Tennis
Coaches: Sarah Thompson, Sam Wilson, Katrina Brennan, Derek Doucet
The Jr. Boys’ Tennis team travelled with the 1st Boys’ Tennis team to UCC this Wednesday to play against UCC. This was our first match of the season and the boys were rearing to go! Lukas Thomas played First Singles and though he started out a little shaky, he really started to find his rhythm around the third or fourth game. The quality of tennis he was playing was impressive, and he kept very levelheaded throughout his match. He played a very quick opponent who got everything back, but Lukas is a very smart player, and he set up his points with precision to take the win at 8-6. James Wootton and Pedro Zapata played First Doubles together, and though they played well with some really strong points, they were defeated 5-8 by UCC. Jack Zhang and Conor Foster played Second Doubles also unfortunately, were beaten by UCC, but are quickly learning more strategy to apply in the upcoming games. Robin Anstoetz played Second Singles. His serve was impeccable, and he was consistently able to place the shots where he wanted them to win quite easily at 8-2. Finally, Tom Kutschinski was the last player to play and all the pressure was on him. We were tied overall at 2-2 so everything depended on him. Tom and his opponent were neck and neck throughout most the game. Tom took a while to find his confidence, but once he did, he was on fire. He won the match 8-6, which meant we won 3-2 against UCC! It was some truly awesome tennis to watch and we can’t wait to see them play again next week!
