Music & Choir

Lakefield College School students learn to appreciate the diversity and beauty of music by playing an instrument, composing, or arranging music on the latest MIDI computer software. Music students become discerning listeners and many become accomplished musicians. All performance groups rehearse twice weekly and each year there are a number of student bands.

List of 6 items.

  • Concert Band

This ensemble consists of musicians from grades nine through twelve who are capable of managing a varied repertoire. They must be willing to make a commitment to rehearsals and performances spanning the school year. The Concert Band gives young musicians who are learning the essentials of practical technique, listening, theory and history the opportunity to practice those concepts in a performing ensemble. It is here that musicians are rewarded with the thrill of live performance and the joy of making music.
  • Concert Choir

The main goal of the concert choir is to give students the opportunity to enjoy creating music of a variety of styles and cultures. This choir is open to all students and the LCS community, no matter what their level of choral experience. Members of the choir will begin to develop good posture, tone, and vocal technique, while learning about and enjoying the experience of singing within a large group of people. The Concert Choir has opportunities to perform for the school, the community, and at various festivals throughout the school year.
  • Jazz Ensemble

This band is formed from specific members of the Concert Band who play the saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, percussion and keyboards. Here, students have their musical experience further enriched by exploring a completely different genre of music from that of the Concert Band. The Jazz Ensemble performs music from soca and Latin, to swing and ballads, to jazz standards and contemporary styles.
  • Lorelei Consort

This smaller chamber choir is formed from auditioned members of the Concert Choir. Here, students learn to sing with good tone, blend, and expressiveness, while challenging themselves with pieces in English and other languages. The repertoire and performance schedule is more challenging than that of the Concert Choir. Members of the Lorelei Consort develop strong vocal skills, which assist them in their roles as leaders in the choral community at LCS.
  • Private Individual Lessons

Private individual lessons for both instrumental and vocal music are available during the school day. Students work one-on-one with highly qualified teachers who live in the area. These lessons are available at all levels, from beginners to students seeking to reach various levels of qualification.
  • Rock Choir

The LCS Rock Choir is an exciting new group that performs choral arrangements of rock and pop songs with full rock band instrumentation. All singers and/or instrumentalists are invited to come to weekly jam sessions in the music room. This choir is "audition free" and runs the whole year long. It is a great mix of students with lots of singing experience and first-time performers. The Rock Choir performs at the annual Remembrance Day service, Winter and Spring Concerts, Coffee Houses and at other school events like Through the Red Door and Regatta Day. The only requirement to join this "Rock Army" is a love of music and the willingness to rock!
