White Water Adventure

By Alaina Robertson

On Monday May 26 and May 27, the entire Grade 10 OE class was out either at Northcote Campus or white water canoeing at Palmer Rapids.  The students had an incredible day putting their OE skills to the test for their practical exam at Northcote.  The students canoed to the north campus, made their lunch and demonstrated several skills including, fire building, knot tying and compass work.  The students were able to demonstrate their skills in a relaxing environment and all proved very successful.

At Palmer Rapids the students were able to practice their white water canoeing skills that they have developed over the past month.  They increasingly became more confident in the white water performing ‘S’, ‘C’ and ferry manoeuvres.  The majority of students ran the lower set of the rapids crashing through big waves and most even got to test out the refreshing water – some more than others! Time and time again the students expressed how much fun they were having throughout the day.   All the staff that helped out with the day were incredible impressed with the confidence and skills that the students demonstrated.

Overall, the two days were extremely successful.  We couldn’t have asked for better weather.  These experiences are what make the “Lakefield difference.” A special thank you to all the staff that helped make these two days so successful!

Here are a few things students had to say about the two days.

“When I finally poked my head out of the water 300 meters downstream of where I capsized, I realised that it was the best OE class I have ever had.”

“I was honestly freaking out before going to Palmer Rapids, but when I got there and started paddling in the river it was so much fun and I realised I was freaking out for no reason.”

“Palmer Rapids was a perfect culminating event to put our two years of paddling to the test. The water itself was challenging to navigate, but fun was guaranteed if you tried. Whether you were a novice paddler or an intermediate paddler, you were guaranteed to have a good time.”

“I loved spending time with my friends on a roller-coaster built by nature! White water canoeing was the most fun and exciting but also challenging part of my entire year at LCS.”
“It was the most fun OE class of the year.”

“I thought the trip to Palmer Rapids was really, really, really fun and I think we should do more white water trips with the course.”

“It was the most fun exam I've ever taken, I really liked it.”

“I really liked it because it was our exam, but it did not feel like it so you didn't have that much pressure.”

“I wish we could do more like that.”

“That was the best OE class.”

“We experienced so many new things that we would not have anywhere else.”

“It was a great opportunity for me to improve my white water paddling skills, and since I do a lot of camping and some of it involves white water, I was very happy to have this chance to improve my knowledge and skills of white water paddling.”

“Palmer Rapids was one of the more fun days of OE this year great chance to work on canoeing skills and step out of your comfort zone.”
