Grade 10s Out in the Community

By Vicky Boomgaardt

As part of their Leadership, Character and Values program, Grade 10 students headed out into the community to volunteer with 14 different local community organizations during last Thursday's Intersession Day.

As part of their Grove Philanthropy Project, back in November, students researched local organizations whose mandate reflected an issue that connected to their values and passions.

In December, they organized interviews with their organization of choice. Thursday's volunteering was one of two opportunities for students to gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing their agencies and give back at the same time.
Some of their tasks included cleaning out turtle cages at the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre, delivering flyers for the Children's Aid Society, helping to prepare Harm Reduction Kits at PARN, cleaning at YES! Shelter for Youth and Families, petting and brushing lots of cats at LAWS and Lakefield's Animal Rescue Krew.

Many thanks to all of our community partners for warmly welcoming our students, sharing their time and expertise and creating meaningful volunteer opportunities.
Grade 10 students will be venturing into the community again during our next Intersession on March 3, 2016.
