What a wonderful Earth Day we had a LCS! It began at 7:00 a.m. with a morning sunrise paddle. The sun was out, and so were more than 35 students and staff. We all enjoyed the serenity of an early morning paddle and an appreciation for beauty that surrounds us. The day continued with a morning of thought provoking LCV (Leadership, Character and Values) sessions for each grade. Before lunch, we gathered as a school to welcome Drew Hayden Taylor, a renowned writer and Indigenous storyteller, who shared some insights about writing and gave a reading from his novel Motorcycles and Sweetgrass.
Students then split apart to engage in a wide variety of Earth Day themed Grove Time activities that offered them the chance to explore their creative side, challenge their comfort zones, exercise their bodies, enrich their minds and explore our campus. Activities included yoga in the woods, birding, cycling on the Lakefield Trail, trying out the climbing wall, competing in a Tough Mudder competition, tie dying, canoeing, jamming by the waterfront, beach volleyball, creating bags from old t-shirts and more.
We all enjoyed a soup lunch fundraiser to in support of a local group working to bring a Syrian family to the Lakefield area. After lunch, the whole school gathered in The Grove to welcome members of the Wshkiigomang Women’s Hand Drum Group, an Ojibway drumming circle from Curve Lake First Nation, who shared their music and storytelling with us.
We ended the day with a community clean up in the Village of Lakefield and trail and a celebration in Isabel Morris Park. Students put in a tremendous effort collecting an impressive 797.4 pounds of recycling and garbage!
Congratulations go out to Mrs. Runza’s advisor group who collected the most recycling and garbage by weight- an impressive 181 pounds! They will have the opportunity to celebrate their achievement with a pizza party in the near future.
After students had weighed their garbage and sorted their recycling, everyone had the chance to enjoy watermelon in the sunshine. At the clean up’s finish, students reported hearing a number of “thank yous” from the people of Lakefield for our efforts to leave the Lakefield trail and the village cleaner from our efforts.
Overall, a great Earth Day celebration!
