Enjoying A Staycation

By Jen Horrigan

A new tradition was born over the April Mid-Term Break. The first ever "Staycation" took place from Thursday, April 21 to Monday, April 25 and saw 23 boarders plus a few day students enjoy the many local attractions we are lucky to have in the area.

Students became more familiar with the Peterborough area and spent time downtown and on the shores of beautiful Little Lake.  Whether it was testing their skill at bowling, enjoying gourmet burgers at the Brick House, working out at the YMCA or relaxing with friends, Peterborough offered a great home base for the weekend.

Friday included a full-day trip to Toronto where students shopped amongst the hustle and bustle of the Eaton Centre. For those looking to get the latest high end fashions, the group headed to Yorkville and the flagship stores of Bloor St. The Royal Ontario Museum provided an educational look at a diverse range of topics.  Whether your interest laid in the history and art of Tattoos, the fashion of Mexico, or the sheer awesomeness of the T-Rex, there was much to see. The evening meant a trip to cheer on the American League East Champions Toronto Blue Jays.  With great seats along the third base line, students and staff saw the action close up and nearly missed catching a souvenir ball.  All the action made for a tiring day full of fun.

Saturday brought a beautiful day in the sun and an excursion to the Ganaraska forest for Tree Top Trekking and a hike.  Swinging from trees, zip lining between them and balancing high above the ground proved to be great fun for all and the students got to venture out of their comfort zone even on the walk into the wilderness.  After lots of time in the sun, the evening was a time to relax and enjoy time together with dinner at the Brick House and a night at the movies.  Good food and fun with friends is always a great way to end a day.

Sunday brought a traditional day of rest. Brunch at Smitty's is a Peterborough tradition and the students experienced it first hand.  After some time at the YMCA and downtime for homework and sleep, the students headed off to dinner in the community.  The Hudson, Horrigan and Bowler families generously opened their homes for an evening of food and fun in what proved to be a trip highlight.

Monday's strip to the Skyzone in Whitby capped off the experience and proved that flying through the air and bouncing as high as you can is fun no matter what age.  An hour and a half of trampoline bouncing also proves to be a good work out as tired students headed back to campus.

The entire weekend was a success and offers wonderful look at just how much fun can be had close to home.
