Looking Back to Look Forward

By Jacob Kee '17

A few weeks ago, our law class embodied ancient and modern philosophers (Socrates, Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, John Locke and Thomas Hobbes) and debated a few current issues such as same-sex marriage, legalization of marijuana, the death penalty, and abortion. All three of these topics are fairly controversial depending on who you ask and where they come from. Students were to research and see what their philosophers stood for as well as their beliefs and generate an opinion based on what their philosophers believed.

Students, acting like philosophers, were to generate their own arguments as well as ask their fellow philosophers questions and try to challenge their opinions on the matter. At the end, each philosopher was to state their conclusion on the topic and make recommendations to the current Canadian government about whether or not the current laws should be changed/amended.
