Staff/Alumni vs 1st Boys’ Basketball team
During the last week of school in 2016, the 1st Boys’ Basketball team faced a real test…playing a staff/alumni team!  It was great to see alumni basketball players back on the court - Andrew Richardson ’09, Ned Burgess ’10, Phil Bian ’12, Eric Wimmelbacher ’12 and Tom Hargreaves ’16 - and to see them take home the win against the 1st Boys’ Basketball team!

1st Boys’ Hockey
The 1st Boys’ Hockey team had a busy two day tournament in Peterborough. Five - count 'em - five consecutive 2-1 games was the story at the St. Peter's Classic Tournament on January 11 and 12 at local arenas in the community.

Some highlights from the tournament were: the contributions from every member of the team, continued improvement, trust and loyalty amongst and between all of the players, a positive work rate and that everyone had a lot of fun.
  • Game 1: 2 - 1 win vs. Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School
  • Game 2: 2 - 1 loss vs. O'Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute
  • Quarter Finals: 2 -1 win vs. Kitchener Collegiate
  • Semi Finals: 2 - 1 win vs. O'Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute in overtime
  • Finals: 2 -1 loss to St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in double overtime.
Coaches Reaume, Gibson, and Armstrong are very proud of the young men and most appreciative of the support from many family members who were at the games.

1st Alpine Ski and Snowboard
The 1st Alpine Ski and Snowboard teams attended a training camp this week at Horseshoe Valley Ski Resort near Barrie, Ontario. Despite the variable weather, the conditions were near perfect for their first real gate training experience on the slopes.

On the first day, students experienced Giant Slalom (Large Radius turns) on the hard packed surface. There was an introductory Slalom set (Short Radius Turns) on another hill to teach the basics. Snowboarders worked with coaches to learn the basics of Giant Slalom and practiced carving turns in basic courses. On the second day the temperatures warmed and the snow softened providing excellent conditions for Slalom training.  The racers had two separate courses to train in throughout the morning progressively making the turns tighter and more challenging. In the afternoon, the team had their first timed runs of the season giving the coaches a chance to set the seeding for the first races next week.

We are excited by the dedication and hard work we have seen from so many athletes so far this season! It looks like the future for the Alpine Ski and Snowboard teams is very bright this season.  The 1st Alpine Ski teams begins their season at Mansfield Ski Club in Orono, Ontario on Wednesday, January 18. Parents and visitors are always welcome at the races and we would love to see you there.  Please contact Mr. Andras ahead of time for ticketing information and directions to the hill if you would like to join the teams.
