Facilitator: Rory Gilfillan
Description: Nietzche once wrote that if you stare into the void long enough the void stares back into you, and from 1965 when the Marines first land at Danang to the fall of Saigon in 1975, we see the full circle of American History and a betrayal of American ideals. In Vietnam we see Americans, once a beleaguered and rag tag guerilla force fighting a distance Empire, become the Empire. In Vietnam, we see a nation once dedicated to freedom foment racial strife at home and abroad. Above all, in Vietnam we see the truth of Mark Twain's warning that, "what gets us into trouble is not what we don't know. It's what we know for sure that just ain't so."
