From Research to Writing: Launching a Summer Plan

The final weeks of the school year are ticking away. With final exams beginning on Monday, Ontario campus tours happening at the end of next week, the broad research phase of the spring is fading and summer is on the horizon.

To ensure our Grade 11 students return to campus this September with their momentum intact, the summer months must be used to tackle the most demanding, time-consuming pieces of the university application portfolio. Previously, we outlined the foundational pieces of summer planning: building soft skills through summer jobs, estimating costs, and narrowing down a "Reach, Possible, Likely" school list. Now we are shifting from high-level research to concrete, region-specific execution.

If your student is aiming for the United States, there is a massive, structured resource available to them right now. If they are looking at Canada, the UK, Europe or Asia, their summer checklist looks a bit different. Here is how to guide your student through the coming months.

For US-Bound Students: Structured Essay Support This Summer

The American college essay is a unique style of writing - it demands deep self-reflection and narrative storytelling. To take the pressure off the busy fall mods, we are thrilled to offer structured summer support.

This is an incredible opportunity for students to draft, workshop, and refine their Common Application personal statements under expert guidance. To complement this, US-bound students must also:
  • Register for the SAT: If they plan to write or re-write, secure a spot for the late August and/or October sittings to hit November 1 Early Decision/Action deadlines.
  • Finalize Teacher Recommendations: Ensure they have submitted the LCS recommendation request form to two Grade 11 teachers and that you, as parents, have completed the Parent Brag Sheet.

Action Items for Other Destinations

If your child is focusing on Canadian or international universities outside of the US, the summer strategy focuses heavily on supplemental applications, technical prep, and timeline alignment.

Canada

While Canadian admissions rely heavily on grades, competitive programs require students to prove who they are beyond the classroom.
  • Update the Record: Students should use the summer to refine their resumes and activities records. Major merit awards look closely at sustained leadership, community impact, and employment history.
  • Scholarship exploration: Several top-tier awards in Canada and the US require an official institutional endorsement from LCS. Our internal selection committees review these early in the fall. Reviewing the Padlet collection (link below) over the summer ensures your student identifies which school-nominated awards they wish to target well before internal deadlines hit.
  • Deconstruct the Prompts: Students should review and brainstorm responses for specific institutional profiles, such as the Waterloo AIF (Accounting/Engineering) or the UBC Personal Profile.

United Kingdom

The UK timeline is highly accelerated for some.
  • Oxbridge Deadlines: For those considering Oxford/Cambridge or Medicine, the UCAS deadline is October 15, which means our LCS Internal Deadline is October 8.
  • Admissions Testing: Register for the UCAT (for medical applicants) or look into specific entrance exams required by Cambridge, Oxford, or UCL.
  • Personal Statements: Unlike the US narrative style, the UK personal statement is 80% academic. Students should review writing guides from Manchester and Durham to structure their drafts.
  • Regular application deadline will be January 13, 2027.

Europe & Asia: Motivation & CVs

  • The "Why" Essay: European and Asian programs regularly require a formal Statement of Motivation (similar to a cover letter) explaining exactly why the student is a fit for that specific course.
  • Standardized Testing: Be aware that an increasing number of global universities require either their own entrance examinations or the SAT (another reason to consider the August or October test dates).

Universal Reminders for All Families

No matter where your child lands, two things remain universal this summer: reading and resume-building. Encourage them to dive into the LCS Summer Reading List to sharpen critical thinking, and remind them that a summer job or exploring enrichment makes for an excellent addition to any application or resume.
By treating this summer as a launchpad rather than a vacation from planning, your student will walk back through the LCS red door in September feeling confident, organized, and ready to apply. As always, please reach out to your family's designated guidance counsellor if you need to schedule a chat before the summer break!
