Ted Pope Day 2020

When a school values the concepts of Outdoors Every Day and Community First, what do they do? The entire school community goes skiing and snowboarding for the day!

All of our students and staff travelled to Sir Sam’s in Haliburton on Thursday, January 23 for a day of skiing and snowboarding for one of our favourite traditions, Ted Pope Day. This annual event began in 1970 and is a wonderful opportunity for us to get outside, enjoy nature through sport, and connect with each other as a community.

The conditions were perfect as an accumulation of snow over the past week along with milder temperatures made for lots of smiling faces and fun on the slopes.  Everyone gathered together for a BBQ lunch before getting some final runs in during the afternoon and boarding the buses back to campus.

Ted Pope Day is named after an Old Boy who attended the Grove from 1939-1942. Ted Pope loved the thrill of adventure, and he found it skiing, mountain climbing and car racing. He was responsible for redefining the scope of downhill skiing, expanding into new areas with the addition of lifts, jumps, and inter-scholastic competition. Ted Pope joined the Navy after graduating from LCS, and he later worked eight years for the CBC as a television producer. He died in 1960, when his TR3 race car spun out of control.
