Lunar New Year at LCS 2022

On Friday, February 4, 2022, our students celebrated the Lunar New Year with their House families. The evening began with an Asian-themed dinner in the Dining Hall, which was made even more special by the addition of authentic drinks from a number of Asian countries. Our students who were familiar with these drinks were excited to see familiar brands from home and those who were newly introduced to the beverages were enthusiastic about tasting the flavours of another culture.

As a school-wide spirit event, students enjoyed traditional New Years' games and Asian-themed Bingo organized by the Asian Affinity Group and guided by leaders from each student house. The capstone activity of the night was a Kahoot Trivia challenge, which featured questions pertaining to the history of the New Year celebrations as well as modern traditions followed around the world. It was a heated competition with Ryder House being named the eventual winners.

The evening ended with the entire school gathering to watch a colourful fireworks display. Despite the chilly temperatures, the crowd was electric and students joined together for pictures with their friends while fireworks lit up the night sky.

Lunar New Year festivities continued on Saturday as students had the opportunity to learn and celebrate further with a dumpling-making workshop. The OE Kitchen and Lower Hadden Hall were hives of activity as parent volunteers taught students the tradition of dumpling-making and prepared 800 dumplings and 300 sweet dumplings for our students to take home to enjoy.

“Making and eating dumplings to celebrate the New Year are things I love doing with my family. So, I was super happy to do those things with my second family here at LCS!" - Shenda ’22

Students also had the chance to participate in raffles, snap photos in front of the selfie wall, and sample a variety of traditional snacks.

It was truly special to see our community come together to learn and celebrate this traditional holiday in a festive and safe way. To our LCS community celebrating here and around the globe, we wish everyone a happy year of the Tiger!
