Boyz Dance Club

From far down the hall you can hear a pulsing beat and laughter, the first indication that something is happening in Upper Hadden Hall. The sound continues to the dance studio where large speakers blast music and several students - massive smiles on their faces - test out dance moves in front of the mirror wall to get their choreography perfect in time for the Dance Showcase.

This is the Boyz Dance Club and it's led by Jimmy Chapman of NRG Breakdancing. Jimmy, who has been teaching dance for the last 13 years, focusses mainly on breakdancing, as well as poppin and hip hop. When asked what he hopes students get out of the club, Jimmy said, "Of course, I would like every student to come away with great dance skills, but more important to build their self confidence. My favourite part of teaching is seeing their excitement when they get a difficult move down." Jimmy finds that since the students come to dance club with different abilities, trying to find a happy medium for all to feel successful is his greatest challenge. Jimmy adds, "I definitely feel like the group is feeling very confident."

“The Boyz Dance Club is something we quickly saw the need for, and a large number of boys who came out to the group were thrilled when Jimmy [Chapman] agreed to lead it this year. His expertise and enthusiasm is a perfect fit with our program.”  - Dance Teacher/Coach Rachel Bemrose
