  Building A Legacy
  When Jock Fleming ’74 came to Lakefield College School in 1969, the academic expectations may have been foremost in his mind, but he quickly discovered that LCS offered so much more. “As students, we were encouraged to try new things, to get outside our comfort zones,” he recalls. “I was a little guy, but I played football. That wouldn’t have happened at a larger school. I was in lots of plays—that gave me a lifelong comfort with public speaking. We built fibreglass kayaks and had marvellous times racing them through white water rapids.” Jock also remembers the feeling of family among the school’s teachers, staff and 225 students. “You learn how to adapt to different people,” he explains. “To get along, you figure out how to communicate and work with all kinds of personalities and that helped me tremendously in my business life. Now that the school is coed, it offers even more of that. We need places like this, where boys and girls learn to relate as equals, friends and colleagues.” Because Jock values his experience at LCS so much, he wants it to be available to anyone who might benefit from it, regardless of financial circumstances. “If our world is to become better,” he muses, “surely it starts with education. LCS teaches such great values—confidence, accountability, leaving places better than you found them—I want more kids to learn and live what LCS has to offer.” With two sons, Rob Fleming ’06 and John Fleming ’03, who spent their high school years at The Grove, Jock and his wife Sue understand that the busy family years are not always the right time for people to make the gift they might want to make to LCS. Estate giving—a bequest, an insurance policy or other planned gift—allows people like Jock to create a substantial contribution that will benefit the school in the future. “It doesn’t cost you anything now,” he urges. “If you have enough to live on in your senior years, give through your estate. Imagine your bequest helping a student who went on to make a significant change in the world! That’s why you want to support bursaries through legacy giving.”

  My Gift of Life Insurance 
  "During the early 1980's two of my '77 classmates, Jim Kemp and Hugh Rawling, chatted up the idea of purchasing life insurance policies for Lakefield College School as a way of initiating a planned giving program.   "After doing a bit more research, I was convinced that this was an affordable way for a guy like me with limited financial means to make a significant financial contribution to LCS. So at the age of 31, I purchased a life insurance policy and transferred the ownership to Lakefield College School.   "Since that time, I receive an annual tax receipt for the premiums I pay, and I'm delighted and surprised to find myself recognized with hundreds of other LCS supporters each year on the donor display wall and in school publications.   In my mind, the elusive "Lakefield Difference" is about commitment and leadership. Although my lifelong commitment to LCS has been unshakable - there have been times when life gets in the way of something as simple as Annual Giving. So when I explored Planned Giving - there was no doubt in my mind that this is how I wanted to honour LCS and, secretly, I believed others might follow!"   "Planned Giving may not be something you have considered as a way of supporting the school but I can assure you that my experience has been both remarkably uncomplicated and personally gratifying."

  A Passion for the Waterfront 
  Like many Lakefield College School alumni, Harold was passionate about the waterfront. Arriving at The Grove in 1951 from his home in Bermuda, it was inevitable that he would be drawn to the heart of the Lakefield College School campus—Lake Katchewanooka. Harold loved to sail.  Following his graduation from LCS, Harold chose to remain in Ontario. He was an active member in his Campbellford, Ontario community and served for a number of years in local municipal government. Throughout his lifetime, Harold maintained close ties to the school and many of his classmates.  In 2004, following Harold’s death, his family approached the school and indicated that it was Harold’s wish that his final gift to The Grove be used in a manner that would enhance either the waterfront or waterfront programs. As a result, his generosity provided the funds needed to complete the reconstruction of the windsurfing hut.  Since then, countless students continue to enjoy the waterfront and the many sports it provides. It is because of Harold Williams’ generous gift and his affection for The Grove’s unique waterfront that our students now have access to a new and well-built windsurfing hut facility.

  Rickey Crang 54

  An Honorary Bursary 
  When J.H. “Rickey” Crang passed away in 1988, he had already made a significant impact on Lakefield College School. He was a zealous supporter, caring deeply about the future of the school and the generations of young people who would experience it. In addition, he worked tirelessly with other LCS alumni and volunteers to ensure that LCS would have the strategies and resources necessary to thrive throughout the final decade of the 20th century and beyond.  In 1997, nine years after his death, and as a result of a gift in his will, The James Harold (Rickey) Crang Jr. Memorial Bursary was introduced at Closing. In consultation with Rickey’s family the following citation, that continues to guide the bursary’s distribution, was created:  Since its inception 15 years ago, approximately 60 young people have benefited directly from this bursary and more than $500,000 has been distributed. Endowing Rickey’s $1 million bequest has ensured that deserving young people will have an opportunity to attend, and benefit from, a Grove education in perpetuity.  As a recent recipient of The James Harold (Rickey) Crang Jr. Memorial Bursary so eloquently stated, “Without you and this bursary, Lakefield College School wouldn’t have been an option. I can’t picture my life without this place, and I owe it to you for allowing me to be part of the magnificent LCS community. Thank you so much.”

  Peter Perry 42

  A Lifelong Commitment to LCS 
  “I have had a close association with LCS all my life,” says Peter Perry ’42 of his relationship with Lakefield College School. “The school made a commitment to me and I am very committed to the school. I couldn’t have found better mentors anywhere else.”   Peter Perry '42 was seven years old when he first came to Lakefield College School in 1932. Headmaster Dr. Mackenzie made it possible for Mr. Perry to attend LCS. “It was the Great Depression and my father's business began to suffer greatly,” says Mr. Perry. “He paid what he could so that I could attend, and the rest of my tuition was covered by the school through a generous bursary."   Mr. Perry’s feeling of connection with Lakefield College School led him to create a bequest gift to the school. “I feel I have a debt to the school,” says Mr. Perry. “They not only gave me a good education, but they taught me to sail and ski and to love the outdoors. It was a unique and wonderful experience to be a student there. I hope that my legacy gift will provide the same experience for future Grove students.”   The other great benefit of his time at LCS was the life long friends and extended community that came from his time as a student, a trustee and a parent. Now, he also speaks of a vision to ensure that the school will thrive in the years to come - no matter what the challenges.

  John Frewer 34

  Bio

  The Emergence of the Heritage Society 
  Even though John Delafosse Frewer graduated from Lakefield Preparatory School in 1934, he maintained an active connection to the school for the rest of his life—returning to the campus countless times as an alumnus, parent, governor and trustee.  Following his arrival as a young boy in 1929, he immersed himself in numerous activities during his time at LPS: cricket, hockey, drama and as a bugler in the Cadet Corps band. In fact, in 1996 John gifted The Grove with his precious bugle—the one used to play “The Last Post” at Captain T.W.B. ‘Spike’ Marling’s funeral in 1935.  In 1997, by including a gift in his will, John became one of the founding members of the Heritage Society now known as the 1879 Society. Always looking ahead, John and his wife shared their affection for The Grove and knew that an unrestricted gift of this type had the potential to make a significant difference to the school. It was also John’s hope that others, like him, would be inspired to make similar philanthropic commitments to Lakefield College School.
