A Feat of Engineering

On March 5, 15 students in Grade 11 and Grade 12 physics competed in the annual "Engineering Week Challenge" at the Evinrude Centre in Peterborough.
This local event, sponsored by the Professional Engineers of Ontario and Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists, aims to promote engineering and expose students to the elements of being an engineer including ingenuity, teamwork and creativity.
For this year's task, each group of four students was to design, build and test a glider using the basic materials provided. Scoring was based on how far the glider flew before hitting the ground, how straight it flew as well as a written report, which posed questions regarding the physics behind a glider and flight.
LCS sent four teams to compete against each other as well as students from local public high schools. Our team of Ethan Daynes, Timur Dauletov, Jackson Harding and Claire Campbell finished 3rd overall.
