Winter Fun Day

By Dylan Clement ’21

On Saturday, March 2, seventeen of Lakefield's Grade 10 students, took part in the first annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Winter Fun Day. This day was entirely led and created by our Grade 10 students from beginning to end with the helpful guidance of the LCV Grade 10 Mentor, Ms. Libby Dalrymple. Since January, the students have been working together at lunch, during an Intersession Day, and committed their Saturday afternoon to this project.

After working with Big Brothers Big Sister in September during our Orientation days, our grade decided to stay involved with the organization and build a relationship with them. After brainstorming how we could use our campus to share a new experience with these kids, the idea of winter and spring fun days came out at the top of the list.

Seeing as winter would soon be upon us, a core group of students volunteered to be the main leaders of this project. Time seemed to pass faster than any of us could have imagined and all of a sudden, the day arrived.   Our welcoming committee was ready to meet the children and their big brothers/sister or family members as they stepped off the bus. We then gathered in Lower Hadden Hall where we split into groups to enjoy a rotation of activities: broomball on the Bob Armstrong Rink, rock climbing, making s’mores in the OE courtyard, sledding on Colebrook Hill. My group ran the campfire station with s’mores and hot chocolate, which was a huge hit!

On behalf of myself and all the other students and staff involved, I can say that this experience has changed all of us for the better. We are all so lucky to have the opportunities that we do such as attending this school; it was amazing to share our beautiful campus with children and families from all different walks of life.
