Playing Chess for Charity

By Timur Dauletov ’19

On Saturday, April 6, LCS held its first chess tournament in a long time, gathering $375 of donations and sending 51% of it to the Canadian Cancer Society and distributing the other 49% of the funds between the winners. The players, despite not having a lot of experience in chess, did not face problems with the time control of 10 + 3 (10 minutes for each player and a 3 second increment per move). That is, no one ran out of time—every game ended by checkmate, resignation, or a draw agreement.

Thank you to the following students and staff for their participation and outstanding performance: Nicole Liu, Nick Ward, Paige Thompson, Natalia Gutierrez, David Bondar-Kurbatski, Andre Vilcini, Chris Otto, Magnus Hepburn, Julius Grosse, Allison Duff, Chloe Thompson, Matt Neville, Rogelio Reyes, Mike Grant, Mike Aben and Berhan Sedukan.

Congratulations to Robin Anstoetz for winning first place and winning $72. Congratulations to Magnus Hepburn, Berhan Sedukan and Andre Vilcini for sharing second place and winning $36 each. Congratulations to Julius Grosse and Chris Otto for sharing fifth place and winning half of an Oreo cookie each.

Thank you to Mike Aben for conducting the pairing by the Swiss System and to Timur Dauletov for organizing this activity.
