The Garden Mural: Community, Collaboration, Creativity

By Angie Zavitz

It is with great excitement that the mural in our Community Garden was unveiled last week. Students have been working on this mural for the LCS Community Garden since October. The community garden involves many student groups connected to our LCS values (LEAF, Thrive, LCV and Safe Space). The Gr 10 student mural designers were challenged to include elements of each of the values while they came up with their design. Students wanted to work with the idea of growth and knowledge that they gain while at Lakefield and where, in life, that takes them. Students had the goal of making the space inviting, fun and colourful.

Fernanda Fulcherberguer came up with the idea of flowers growing from an open book.   Some of the artists involved, Leonie Dill, Chelsea Yue, Nancy Lu changed the idea of flowers to a tree, a symbol of Lakefield's values, strength and permanence.   Student Caroline Chen wanted to include imagery that spoke about Lakefield welcoming students from all over the globe; it was decided that a suitable image would be origami birds.  The birds fly out of the book, small and not brightly coloured. They grow and become intensely coloured and individualized as they fly away from the book, which is the base of knowledge - Lakefield College School.

Through the process, students were encouraged and guided by professional mural artist Victoria Wallace and the school's art teacher, Angie Zavitz, along with the support of Libby Dalrymple, our LCV Grade 10 Mentor.

The hard work began on intersession day, April 26, when approximately thirty Grade 10 students came together to start painting the large mural panels and the birds.  The hard work continued during evenings and weekends as a core group of grade 10 students remained committed to completing the painting, touch-ups, varnishing and installation.

The students should be very proud of their hard work and dedication. Ms. Zavitz, the art teacher, remarks, “It feels good to see the students success up on the walls! I want these young artists to realise that with hard work and energy and commitment you can achieve big things. I hope they will remember how this success feels after weeks of hard work. I hope they remember how good it feels to be a part of a collaboration; to have energy and to create energy and happiness through creativity, commitment and hard work. You can do it! You did it and it looks great!”
