Grade 9 Elements Program Kickoff

By Erica Chellew

Our Grade 9 students have completed the first Elements block of their academic year. This program seeks to offer students time to integrate their knowledge and skills in a forum where future-ready competencies are practiced and encouraged. These include important skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration (elements of success for citizens of our future communities).

On Wednesday morning, the Grade 9’s met as a group at the waterfront to learn more about the Elements program and how they will be involved. They worked in groups to tackle topics addressing some of the world's current problems like water security, education equity and access to healthcare. Specifically, these initial activities were designed to practice collaboration.*  One core belief of the Grade 9 team is that students need to be able to take risks while practicing future-ready competencies. Of course, there was no expectation that students would arrive at any magical solutions to the world’s biggest problems, however, the exercise did provide them with the time and space to practice working together on something challenging.

Exploring Character Strengths
Also integral to our Grade 9 Program are foundations of positive psychology. Students completed the VIA Character Strengths survey earlier this week, where they discovered some of their ‘signature strengths’. This is the combination of personal characteristics, personality traits, and physical, social/emotional abilities that feel essential to who we are, come the most naturally to us, and energize us in many aspects of our lives. You are encouraged to not only ask your son/daughter about their top strengths, but also feel free to complete the adult version of the survey to learn more about your own character strengths. Students will continue to explore elements of their character as we incorporate many aspects of positive psychology into our programming and to use a strengths-based approach in the Grade 9 program this year.

* Collaboration as defined by the Ontario Ministry’s 21st Century Competencies foundation document as: “the ability to ‘work in teams, learn from and contribute to the learning of others’ and demonstrate empathy while working with others”.
