Applying Lessons in Optics

By Ms. Diane Rogers

The physics unit of Grade 10 Science is the study of optics — how light reflects and refracts. One of the lab experiences that some of the students participated in this week was dissecting a cow eye! Students took on the roles of  "chief surgeon" and/or  "tech support" with a partner to dissect and discover how the various parts of the eye work together to allow us to see. In particular, we looked at how the lens of a cow eye can be used to produce both upright and inverted images.

This is an optical phenomenon that can be seen in many applications all around us.

Last spring on the second day of a very rainy 3-day canoe trip in Grade 9, Victoria L. was captivated by the inverted images that she could see looking through the individual raindrops hanging from the pine needles on a tree at the campsite. She captured this appreciation of nature's beauty and excellence in a photo and I shared with her that she would learn more about how and why these images are created during the physics unit of Grade 10 Science. 6 months later, Victoria's experience came full circle. During the dissection, we were able to capture an inverted image of Victoria, herself, looking through the lens of the cow eye and she is well on her way to fully understanding the optics concepts that explain how this works.
