Athletics Action: 1st Girls' Hockey

By Ms. Amanda Russo and Ms. April Looije

Wednesday, December 11 (Kawartha Festival)
Last week the 1st Girls’ Hockey team had an incredible day at our first Kawartha Festival of the year!

Ana Jervis stepped up to the plate in net after our starting goaltender was injured just prior to the tournament. Ana had never played hockey before this season and rose to the challenge of going in net with only a week’s notice. Her diving breakaway save and lightning-quick glove hand were both highlights of the day.

Our girls fought through a long day of 5 games and worked their hearts out on every shift. Throughout the day we came up with 3 beautiful goals to put LCS on the board. Olivia Murphy showed her tenacity in never giving up until the whistle, to put the puck past the goalie in a scramble in front of the net. Hayley Schwartzentruber showed her patience on the blue line as she fired a shot from the point right into the back of the net on a power play. Grace Bender rounded out the LCS scoring for the day by following the play to the net and putting away a perfect rebound from right out front.

The 1st Girls’ team has a number of players that went outside of their comfort zone to join the team this year, and learn a new sport. Many had never played hockey before this season including Jieun Yu, Stefanie Hockaday, Yeseo Kim, Alejandra Porcar Munoz, Kennedy Bardawill, Olivia Geloso, and Julianna Cook. Each and every one of them has shown such determination and perseverance in their time with the team so far.

A very big shout out to our veteran players as well for the guidance and support they’ve given their teammates who are just starting to learn the exciting game of hockey! A final thank you to Jess Dobson for coming to the team’s rescue with emergency equipment deliveries and skate sharpening runs midway through the tournament - the true unsung hero of the day! The 1st Girls’ Hockey team is never a dull moment, and Coaches April, Amanda, and Dana are thrilled with the excitement, energy, and efforts that the girls brought to the tournament.

Wednesday, December 18 (vs. Holy Name of Mary)
The First Girl's Hockey Team played their first regular season game this Wednesday in the old Kawartha Barn in Mississauga. The girls were able to shake off their bus legs in the first after a quick goal from Holy Name. Olivia Murphy opened up the scoring for Lakefield minutes later with a rebound from veteran Madia McGowan. Lakefield continued to apply pressure in the second period, outshooting Holy Name as their goalie stood on her head making save after save. Madia was able to net her own rebound with a solid deke around the goaltender. Down 5-2 going into the third, Lakefield continued to pour on the pressure, with a couple of awesome opportunities from standout defensemen Hayley Schwartzentruber. Olivia Murphy got a beauty in the third after peppering their goalie all game.

Shoutout to our players who played their first ever full hockey game (Olivia Geloso, Alejandra Porcar, Ana Jervis, Yeseo Kim, Julianna Cook) and rocked it! The final score was 6-3, with Lakefield massively outshooting their opponents. Coaches Amanda and April are super impressed by the hard work put forth. These ladies understood the true meaning of the game and played with pride, heart and passion. We are so excited for what the rest of the season has in store for us!
