Connecting Globally Through Art

As their first project of the year, students in Grade 11 Visual Arts created a series of three postcards. To make their postcards, students used mixed media and connected their series of three with an overarching theme. As an authentic learning experience and in an effort to participate in a greater art community, each student chose one of their cards to be sent to Surface Gallery, an artist-run Contemporary Art gallery in Nottingham, United Kingdom, to participate in Surface Gallery's annual International Postcard Show. The artwork will be on display at the gallery from January 11 to February 1, 2020. Students will have the opportunity to put their cards up for sale and to participate in an artist card swap, which would result in students being mailed a card from another participating artist from elsewhere in the world!
From Surface Gallery: “We have had over 350 postcards from; America, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Spain, States, Republic of Korea, and the United Kingdom.”
Student commentary on their participation:
"I feel very excited to enter my card into an actual exhibit. I felt that this project had an overall purpose which made me think deeper about my choices. This also made me have more care in the final product. I think it’s really neat that we will also get to see someone else’s art and that even though we are far away we are connected by art." - Kate Bemrose, Grade 10

"I felt very honoured to be entering one of my cards into a public exhibition. I felt proud of my painting. Also, I’d like to show my card to more people and express my ideas to different people, and I hope people can get inspired from one of my paintings." - Jesse Zheng, Grade 10
"I am excited about it because I worked hard on my postcards and I want people to see how hard I worked on them." - Grace Devitt, Grade 11
"I think it is a really good opportunity especially because I want to study art in my future and to enter my card into a public exhibition will give me a small sense of what if feels like having the public looking at your work and even buying it." - Fernanda Fulcherbeguer, Grade 11
