Preparing for Postsecondary Studies

Lakefield College School students are in the midst of the application season for September 2020 postsecondary entry. Though the season has really just started, our students have received early offers from coast to coast in Canada, and from universities in the United States, the United Kingdom and Spain. We expect many more offers to come in within the next couple of months. A number of students have also received generous scholarship offers.  After the bulk of offers arrive, our guidance counsellors will continue to work with students on helping them choose to accept the best offer for them, and also on residence applications and first-year course selection.

Guidance counsellors work with students from the time they arrive until the day they graduate, helping them not just to choose courses and complete applications, but to understand their strengths, skills and abilities, explore careers and set goals for themselves. By the time students are in their graduating year, they have researched various career options, interviewed people working in the profession to which they aspire, developed a detailed resume outlining their volunteer experiences, extracurricular activities, and personal strengths, and identified a variety of compelling postsecondary options.

In 2019, graduating students chose to enter university in the following programs:
  • Sciences/Health Sciences: 28%
  • Humanities/Social Sciences: 24%
  • Engineering: 10%
  • Business: 19%
Other choice programs included architecture and design, journalism, and medicine. The top five university destinations in Canada were Queen’s University, University of Toronto, Western University, McGill University and Dalhousie University. Combined scholarship offers for the Class of 2019 totaled over $1.2 million.

Lakefield College School graduates study at postsecondary destinations worldwide. We are proud that alumni from the past few years are now studying at 7 of the world's top 10 universities, as selected in the authoritative QS World University Rankings! In the past five years, students have attended Berklee College of Music, University of California, Irvine, University of California San Diego, Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, Cooper Union, Elon, George Washington, Georgetown, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Minnesota, Northeastern, Parsons: The New School for Design, Pomona College, Savannah College of Art and Design, Southern California Institute of Architecture, Stanford and Virginia in the United States, as well as having being accepted directly into universities in Australia, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, England (including Oxford), France, Germany, Grenada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Scotland (including St Andrews), Spain and Switzerland.

All Grade 12 students have been working with their guidance counsellor since September on university applications and plans after graduation. Practicing self-reflection, asking questions and making academic choices builds skills in making decisions that honour their individual situations and prepares students best for learning and contributing as caring members of their community.
