Engaging in Critical Media Literacy and Unplugging for Winter Carnival

We held an Intersession Day on February 25; intersession days are grounded in experiential programming that supports students in each grade and offers unique opportunities to reflect on, question, and engage in activities designed to complement and enrich their learning. For Tuesday's Intersession, our students spent the morning engaged in dialogue and learning about Critical Media Literacy.
The day began with a talk from media expert, Chris Volum, who engaged the group with a message about developing empathy and resilience in their online worlds and about the importance of spreading positivity and being mindful about what one 'likes' and posts in their community. Students then broke off into their grades and participated in a student-driven media literacy session where they engaged with one another on topics such as 'fake news,' social media trends and current 'hot topics' as they related to the media we consume. Students were given tools and some academic background on the field of Critical Media Literacy to assist them in unpacking complex messages they receive through media in their daily lives. Conversations ranged from how young people interact with their friends online, to the social media responsibilities of political leaders, and the online dialogue surrounding this year's Superbowl Halftime Show. In our evolving digital world, this session was an invaluable opportunity to learn and discuss how we can be mindful about our engagement with and consumption of online platforms and media messages.

After lunch, our full community travelled to our Northcote campus to enjoy our annual Winter Carnival. The weather was perfect and students enjoyed horse-drawn sleigh rides, Beavertails, hot chocolate, and spending time with one another under a fabulous late winter sun. This event is a perfect time to 'unplug' from our digital worlds and connect with one another in the outdoors.
