Welcoming Our Exchange Visitors from Senlis, France

By Mr. Gerry Bird

February at LCS means March Break is right around the corner and our March Break Language Exchange students are getting ready to travel to their respective host countries and schools. On February 20, we were pleased to welcome three exchange visitors from Lycee Saint-Vincent in Senlis, France, which is a school that LCS has exchanged with for over thirty-five years. Senlis is a very picturesque village nestled in the French countryside about 40 km north of Paris.

Joining us for three weeks, between now and March Break, are Grade 10 students, Anaïs Maurice, Lydia Rincon, and Nicolas Devos. In the short week they’ve been with us, the French students have tried their hand at cross-country skiing in OE class, baked Brazilian Brigadeiros and Mardis Gras King Cakes with the International Club, enjoyed a horse-drawn sleigh ride at the Northcote Campus, and successfully weathered a late-February blizzard!

On March 12, LCS students, Alastair Ward '22, Ella Zegarra Brown '22, and Santiago Ramirez '21 – who are partnered for exchange with Anaïs, Lydia and Nicolas, respectively – will fly to Paris with the French students, where they will reside in a home-stay with their exchange partners’ families and attend Lycee Saint-Vincent for three weeks over the March Break.

Also travelling to Europe on March 12 will be Alana Kim '22 and Shenda Fitton '22 who will be participating in the March Break Spanish Exchange Program. Shenda and Alana will look to improve their Spanish proficiency while staying with their exchange partner’s families and accompanying them to their school, Colegio Nuestra Señora Santa María in Madrid, for three weeks. The Lakefield and Santa Maria students will return to Canada together on April 1. The Spanish visitors will then be able to enjoy all that LCS has to offer – including the occasional spring snowfall, collecting sap to make maple syrup, and experiencing boarding life for the first time. They will return home to Madrid on April 23.

We wish all of these adventurous individuals - as well as our students leaving or returning from Grade 10 Exchanges, embarking on the March Break Global Learning Trips, or just travelling home for the holiday – safe travels and a pleasant journey.
