Exploring Positive Psychology through our Flourish Fiesta

By Ms. Libby Dalrymple

Flourish: “to grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favourable environment."

This, in essence, is what we aspire to at Lakefield College School. We are very intentional about cultivating a particularly favourable environment and strongly believe that this environment helps students to grow in a healthy way and vigorous way. The definition of flourishing aligns well with our school’s mission "To challenge and enable students to reach their individual potential in mind, body and spirit."

Fiesta: Spanish word for party.

On Saturday morning, new students gathered at the waterfront to take part in the "Flourish Fiesta." They rotated through a series of fun, interactive activities that had them exploring some of the principles of Positive Psychology which is a foundational element of our approach to learning and wellbeing. Positive psychology offers tools for coping with challenging life events, enhancing positive experiences and flexibly moving through the broad range of human emotions. The main pillars or "pathways to flourishing" fit together in an acronym known as PERMA-V:

  • Positive Emotion
  • Engagement
  • Relationships
  • Meaning and Purpose
  • Accomplishment
  • Vitality

At each station, students learned a bit about the science behind certain Positive Psychology principles such as Gratitude, High Quality Connections, Savouring, Mindfulness, Reframing negative emotions. They followed up with a hands-on activity that put that science into practice.

Spending time in nature has a myriad of benefits for wellbeing. When this is combined with physical activity and friends, the wellbeing boost is even greater! As part of the fiesta, students also ventured in groups into our beautiful forest to hike some of our trails, including the "Wellbeing Trail" which includes various stops along the way that encourage people to do things such as engage their senses, appreciate nature, practice mindfulness, and breathe.

It was a glorious day of sunshine which added to the experience as students and staff connected with each other in the beautiful natural environment that we are very fortunate to enjoy at LCS.
