Student Leadership and Community Spirit

One of Lakefield College School’s defining characteristics is its long-held commitment to developing leadership and character in students. The school’s focus on leadership is formalized in its Leadership, Character, Values Program (LCV) which encompasses all grade levels and is supported by grade mentors. Students learn to create goals and develop areas of focus in their leadership skills development and are supported by staff in ways that enable fun, learning, and reflection.

One important aspect of leadership development at LCS, is the active involvement of our senior students in nourishing and maintaining a positive community spirit. Each year, our seniors are tasked with the goal of elevating community spirit by encouraging connection and engagement among our students through spirit events. They conceive of, plan, and execute anywhere between 80-100 events (on average) each year, for our community to enjoy.  With the support of LCS staff, our seniors assume the majority of the responsibility associated with each event.

An accomplishment to be proud of in any year, this year, in particular, they have done an exceptional job of re-imagining spirit events that honour our safety guidelines, while still having fun. From events like Extinguish the Flame for the whole community at the beginning of the year, to other events that have been organized by grade or within Paper House groups, the events have been creative with the goal while being as inclusive as possible. This week's focus has been "Halloweek". Grads have provided all students with many wonderful opportunities to celebrate and connect with each other all week. It culminates tonight with a community favorite, Haunted Halls, with over 80 grads helping to run the event. This is a testament to the commitment of this year's grads to maintain school spirit and have all students feel connected.
