Model UN Crisis Session Ft. Ms. Kee and Mr. Runza

This week, students participating in a Model UN Crisis simulation welcomed Head of School Ms. Kee and Assistant Head: Safety Mr. Runza into their simulation...or at least representatives for them! Two sets of students in the class elected to play the roles of Ms. Kee and Mr. Runza in their Zombie Apocalypse crisis simulation. Grace Bender ’22 and Riana Leveque ’22 played the role of Ms. Kee while Sarah Jiang ’22 and Victoria L ’22 represented Mr. Runza. To their peers’ delight, the delegates put on their best show of impersonating and speaking in the voices of Ms. Kee and Mr. Runza.

The crisis model was developed and facilitated by Nicole Liu ’21 and Riley Dagg ’22 and involved a situation in which a zombie was set loose in the school, causing mayhem to the community. Ms. Kee and Mr. Runza were there to save the day and gathered a group of students to address the issue. While four students played Ms. Kee and Mr. Runza, the other students in the class played themselves.

To the delight of their peers, Grace and Riana channelled Ms. Kee’s messages of unity (often shared in her Monday Head of School Addresses  during Chapel). When responding to the zombie crisis at hand, Grace and Riana said, “We’re all together and that’s what matters...believe me, we need to be there for each other and come together to collaborate so that we can get through this...because we’re Lakefield, and we got this!” Their peers chuckled as they recognized the parodied version of Ms. Kee, fondly played by Grace and Riana.

Sarah and Victoria assumed the role of Mr. Runza and focused on the safety measures and precautions their peers in the simulation should take. The two performed their impersonations,  borrowing from Mr. Runza’s safety messages shared in Chapel, and mirroring his tones of seriousness and dedication to safety at LCS. Mr. Runza (who came to see the simulation and witness first hand how he would be portrayed by the students) smiled as the two delivered their best “Runza” impression, mimicking his safety messages shared over the past year.

The class thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they took on the roles of cherished members of the LCS community. Not only did they have fun, it was another great learning experience in Model UN as students worked together to troubleshoot and problem solve while practicing proper modelling procedures within their fictional situation. Students made directives, submitted crisis notes, debated, and raised motions to share their perspectives. Authentic learning experiences like this one are what allow our students to truly grow and thrive in an environment supported by their teachers and peers.
