Rocking Out at the LCS Airbands Competition

On Thursday, March 18, LCS students held dress rehearsals for their first in-person Airbands House competition of 2021. Airbands is a fun community event (and competition) at LCS where students get a chance to live like – or at least perform like – their favourite musicians! In their house groups, students select a song [or montage of two or three!] to perform and then choreograph dance moves and lip sync to the music.

Each student house was given 30 minutes to practice their routine and get a feel for performing in the Bryan Jones Theatre. They coordinated music, lighting, and spacing with their peers to be sure their final performance would really “wow” the LCS community.

On Friday, our performers were ready to show off their moves! Student Houses took turns performing in Chapel while other houses tuned into the virtual live stream of their performance.

“As a dance teacher [Air Bands] is one of my favourite spirit events of the year and this year was beyond amazing. I was completely blown away by the seamlessness of the organization from the movement of people to the tech. The change from the video feed of the performers to the judges was seamless and I felt like I was immersed in the event from beginning to end…Congrats to everyone who took the risk and got up on that stage!” - Ms. Rachel Bemrose

The winners for each category were:

Tiktok - Wadsworth House

Classic Rock - Uplands House

Disney - Moodie House

International - Rashleigh House

Hip Hop - Grove House

2000s Pop - Memorial House

Many students were involved in the organization of this event, ensuring that it ran smoothly and their peers had fun. Gavin ’21 was particularly involved in the event and helped coordinate the activities. “In my grade nine year, Airbands was the moment where I finally felt I belonged in my house. This event is one of the only competitive house events of the year and is a significant bonding moment for people in many houses. Regardless of who won or lost last Friday, I watched houses come together to compete in a very successful evening. As a grad, it was fun to be a part of the planning process for an event like Airbands and generate innovative ideas with my peers regarding how we would plan this event in a COVID-19 safe way. Everyone involved did an amazing job and Airbands 2021 turned out to be a success!”

We’d like to say thank you to the tech team that ensured the rehearsal and final performance were successful. Dylan Smith and Devon Hansen also had a huge role in the music booth, organizing music cues, lighting cues, and more.

We’re also grateful to Mr. Geoff Bemrose and Ms. Su Armstrong for their ideas, generosity, and time. The students also appreciated the confidence boost they offered, which helped them have the courage to perform live!

Our community not only comes together to enjoy the fun of spirit events like this one, it takes the community’s efforts to make them happen.
