Life During the Pandemic with Dr. Lisa Damour

Our community was fortunate to (virtually) welcome Dr. Lisa Damour last week in two sessions – one designed for students and one for parents – about managing mental health and well-being during the pandemic. Dr. Damour is a best-selling author and clinical psychologist who is recognized as a thought leader by the American Psychological Association.

On Thursday, May 13, Dr. Damour spoke with our Grade 12 students about her definition of mental health, which focuses more on being well than being happy all of the time. Dr. Damour offered some helpful tips illustrated through clever analogies to help our students grasp the importance of self-care. Ellie Murdock ’21 attended the session and said Dr. Damour “stood out as a speaker to the grad class because of her realism and authenticity towards what university and college will look like and what to expect.” Dr. Damour reminded our students that this summer is an opportunity to rest and focus on joy; their hard work is done and they need a chance to recuperate in time for the next phase of their academic journeys. She also took time to acknowledge the challenges our grads have overcome as they experience a milestone moment during the pandemic.

On Friday, May 14, Dr. Damour spoke with parents – in our community and beyond – about how to handle difficult parenting moments during the pandemic. Dr. Damour acknowledged that the pandemic has brought on many intense parenting moments in which parents often struggle to navigate communication challenges with their teens. Dr. Damour reviewed common issues and helpful strategies parents can use to better understand and communicate with their child(ren).

We are grateful to Dr. Damour for sharing her expertise and time with our community.

For those who were unable to attend, you can view a recording of the session online.
