The Jack Ride at LCS

By: Libby Dalrymple

The Jack Ride is Canada’s Ride for Youth Mental Health, held each spring in support of thousands of young leaders working for the future of youth mental health in Canada. This year’s Jack Ride is virtual. For the first time ever, people are riding together, yet apart, all over Canada. Money raised from the ride will go towards the important work done by the organization Jack.org.

Lakefield College School has an active “Jack Chapter” which has been operating as a co-curricular and organizing initiatives for three years. During Mental Health week, everyone watched a “Jack Talk” during house meetings and advisor times. It highlighted ways to support the mental health of themselves and others.

This year, staff and students participated in the Jack Ride as members of “Brent’s Team”.  Brent Dadds, Class of 2020, sadly passed away earlier this year.  He was one of the first students to be part of the Lakefield Jack Chapter, and so it is a privilege for the school community to be involved in the Jack Ride as a way to honour his memory.

Students participated in the Jack Ride on Saturday, May 24 during which they competed for paper house points as they attempted to cycle as many kilometres as possible in an hour. Members of staff will be riding on Saturday, May 29, which is the official ride date.

We would like to congratulate Uplands and Upper Colebrook Houses for having the greatest participation and distance. Our on-campus students will receive a tub of ice cream and cones to enjoy as a house snack. We are grateful to Central Smith Creamery and alumna, Jillian Scates ’13 for this generous donation. Remote riders from the winning houses will receive gift certificates from Stuff Store—a local business run by the family of staff member and alumnus, Elliot Exton ’11.

It was a beautiful day and there was a tremendous sense of spirit as boarders took turns doing their laps and remote students logged their distances on Strava. This THRIVE-sponsored initiative, which got students outdoors, active, connecting with friends and doing something to benefit others, was beneficial for everyone’s well-being!
