LCS Reads | Student Edition

We’re excited to announce the launch of LCS Reads Student Edition – an exciting initiative taking place this summer. At Lakefield College School, we read. It’s a critical skill on the path to becoming a lifelong learner and helps to cultivate and develop the “6 C’s” of the Future-Ready Learner; creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, citizenship, character, and communication. We read to build perspective. We read to develop empathy. We read to broaden our understanding of the world around us. We read to decrease stress. We read to find joy. We read to lose ourselves in our thoughts. And most importantly, we read to become better readers.

Not only will students read this summer, but LCS staff will read as well. Staff will explore six books that address various diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. The titles our staff will be choosing from this summer include Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People (Anthony Greenwald and Mahzarin Banaji), The Vanishing Half (Brit Bennett), Braiding Sweetgrass (Robin Wall Kimmerer), Between the World and Me (Ta-Nehisi Coates), White Fragility (Robin DiAngelo), and The Trans Generation: How Trans Kids (and Their Parents) are Creating a Gender Revolution (Ann Travers).

With the student edition of LCS reads, our aim is to share the excitement of reading with our students. We acknowledge that we have a diverse community of students with varied interests. As such, we are offering each grade level three book choices to allow everyone the opportunity to find joy in reading. Through reading, we learn about ourselves, the world, others, and it’s how we come to better understand, care for, and contribute to those in our community. Reading these books will also help prepare our students for lively and engaging discussions when they return to school in September.
