Prioritizing Health and Wellness | LCS Launches a New Fitness and Wellbeing Program

Written by: Michelle Avery

A sound body facilitates a sound mind. This is an idea that dates back to ancient Greece (if not earlier) and is deeply entrenched in our school motto. In fact, it has been more than 140 years since Lakefield College School’s inception, and our initial commitment to our school motto, mens sana in corpore sano—a sound mind in a sound body. Nearly a century and a half later, this motto remains integral to how LCS functions today.

Following almost two unprecedented years of ‘pandemic life’ characterized by stress and unpredictability, we are intent on prioritizing our students’ overall health and wellbeing. As such, we are excited to launch our new Fitness and Wellbeing Program–an initiative designed to challenge and enable each student to reach their full potential in mind, body, and spirit.

The benefits of exercise occur at all ages but are especially important during adolescence and early adulthood when the central nervous system is developing. Benefits such as increased energy, sharpened focus, enhanced mood, increased memory, and improved productivity are all correlated to participation in physical activity.

Our new Fitness and Wellbeing Program was designed to provide a transformative and inclusive experience that will enable students to embody their best selves and help them succeed in all aspects of their lives. Further, this program is designed to demonstrate and reinforce the importance of the interconnectedness between physical activity, wellness, and mental performance.

As part of this program, students will be guided to explore and discover the types of movement that provide them with the most enjoyment and meaning in addition to maximal physical and mental health benefits. At LCS, we embrace and instill joy as a core value; therefore, providing a wide variety of activities and choices for students is paramount. One of our goals is to help students discover activities that feel like a gift, rather than a chore– that is when movement has the potential to become magical. Whether you enjoy walking on our beautiful trails, canoeing across Lake Katchewanooka, riding your bike with friends, or stand-up paddleboarding at sunset—each student’s ideal activity will vary based on their needs and interests and we look forward to establishing a unique and personalized plan that is as special and distinctive as each individual.

We are thrilled to work with our students and help to provide support, encouragement, and education throughout their wellness journey.
