Mindfulness and Wellbeing Tips from Ms. Dalrymple

This week, we were treated to a classic Canadian winter, receiving almost two feet of snow on campus! For some, this weather can spread joy, opening up opportunities to participate in winter activities, such as skiing and tobogganing. However, Ms. Dalrymple recognizes that the winter season can also be challenging. The days feel shorter with fewer hours of daylight and the temperatures drop to frigid levels. These factors can cause emotional “dips” and feelings of “blueness”.

This week, and in advance of Bell Let’s Talk Day (which takes place next Wednesday, January 26, 2022), Ms. Dalrymple shared some wellbeing and mindfulness tips to help our students, staff, and faculty feel their best throughout the snowy season and beyond.

Think about how you “bookend” your day:
  • What can you do in the morning to prepare yourself, mentally, for your day?
  • How do you wind down in the evening?
  • Are you content with your routine?
Try to spend as much time in natural light as possible:
  • Spend time outdoors to get your daily dose of Vitamin D.
  • Use a light therapy lamp when you can’t get outdoors (there is one in each house and two in the library).
Prioritize time outdoors:
  • Physical activity, spending time outdoors, and making social connections is a magic combination.
  • Get your "Vitamin N" - spend time in nature and reap its many benefits.
  • Being active outdoors with a friend is a good “triple booster”!
Set realistic goals for yourself:
  • Manage your expectations and pace yourself.
  • These are trying times and we must have realistic expectations of ourselves and others.
Tune into yourself and figure out what works best for you:
  • What energizes you?
  • What calms you?
  • We are all different and living in different circumstances so we need to take care of ourselves in different ways.
We shared these tips with students this week and will continue the conversation about mental wellbeing next week as we discuss mental health in light of Bell Let’s Talk day.
