The Academic Benefits of Maple Syrup Harvesting at LCS

At LCS, “we aspire to be internationally recognized for crafting transformative experiences that deliver on our commitment to Authentic Learning, Community First and Outdoors Every Day.” One way to achieve this type of transformative experience is to extend the classroom beyond the walls of the academic block. There’s so much for our students to learn by being outdoors—from broad concepts such as agricultural, ecological literacy, mindfulness and responsibility to specific skills, such as forestry and soil science.

We extend programs like maple harvesting and beekeeping to other parts of our academic program to provide an enriching and well-rounded experience for our students. When they participate in our maple program, students not only learn about how to tap trees, collect sap, and produce syrup, but they also learn about business and marketing, product/label design, the history of maple syrup and land care practices, and more. It’s important that our students see the relevance of what they are learning and how it can apply to real-life situations.

Learn more about the maple syrup program at LCS and how our students benefit from it in our new Maple Syrup video series with Mr. Hart.
