The Untold Story of Karla | Ms. Dalrymple’s Grade 11 Spanish Class

Written by: Cam Eatmon ’23

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” - Maya Angelou

This week my Spanish class had the honour of hearing the Untold story of El Salvadorian immigrant Karla. I had the great fortune of meeting Karla in Waco, Texas in December. My Mom, Sister, and I spent the day in her eyelash salon. We got to know Karla very well and she shared a bit about her journey from El Salvador to the USA. Karla’s story ricocheted through us and my Mom asked her if she would share her story with my Spanish class. Karla said yes and this past Monday she joined us via Zoom to talk to my class. Karla first told us her untold story in English because we knew that it was important to really understand all the details. After a few questions from the class, Ms. Dalrymple asked Karla to retell the story in Spanish. Karla expressed apprehension, she was nervous because to tell the story in her native tongue would mean connecting to an emotional portion of the story that she had not yet tapped into. She started and immediately, whether you knew every word or not, you could tell the rich and vibrant details that began to unfold before you. She told two new parts of the story that she had not shared the first time and they were beautiful and shocking to hear. We are so thankful that Karla trusted us with her untold story and we promise the lessons learned about immigration, poverty, and humanity will never go untold.
