Grade 10 Students Use Math to Solve Escape Room Challenges
In most circumstances, when students’ eyes dart to the clock repeatedly to check the time, it’s a sign that they’re not engaged in their learning. In our Grade 10 Math classes this week, the opposite was true. Students raced against the clock to solve puzzles in escape rooms designed by Ms. McGill, Mr. McRae, and Mr. Adams.
The class worked in small groups and used their knowledge of mathematical concepts and their collaboration and problem-solving skills to solve eight different puzzles related to the content of the course.
Not only did this culminating assignment provide students with the chance to show the knowledge they’ve gained throughout the year, but it will also help them retain their learning in the months and years ahead. Research has shown that students have a higher likelihood of preserving their knowledge if they engage in active learning activities, such as escape rooms.
Well done to all who participated and congratulations to those who managed to escape!
