Paddling at Palmer Rapids

Throughout the year, our OE classes have been developing new skills to use in the wilderness. From practicing canoe over canoe rescues to learning synchronized strokes to proper positioning of paddlers and gear, they have learned so much and gained well-founded confidence in their abilities.

These skills were put to the test over three separate trips with Mr. Andras, Mr. Bemrose, Ms. Bugeia, and Ms. Connelly’s Grade 10 and 11 OE classes. The classes ventured up to Palmer Rapids on the mighty Madawaska River to put their white water canoeing skills to the test!

After two weeks of swift water rescue training and paddling locally below the Lakefield dam and at Burleigh falls, our students were excited to paddle a bigger river. They spent their time working on their C-turns, S-turns and Ferries, swimming in the rapids and running the lower set.

Back at camp, our now-expert OE students cooked pita pizzas and enjoyed s'mores while singing around the campfire. It was wonderful to see our students connect, face to face, in the outdoors without technology in sight.

The trips made for some amazing experiences that were accented with epic canoe dumps, memorable camp moments, and many smiling faces!
