LCS Students Donate Seeds for Bees

This year, our neighbours in Lakefield and Peterborough may experience fuller gardens, fortified with an abundance of wildflowers, thanks to our student volunteers. Last week, a group of LCS students volunteered their time to tour the community, gifting sachets of wildflower seed packets to local residents in an effort to help pollinator insects thrive.

In 2021, Lakefield College School participated in 24 Good Deeds Charity advent calendar, which features 24 projects that focus on healthcare, nutrition, the environment, education, and infrastructure. The proceeds from calendar sales are given to the participating charities to work toward their unique projects to help make positive change around the world.

Lakefield College School applied for a position on the 2021 roster of charities and was selected for our “Seeds for Bees” project. Each sale of a 24 Good Deeds advent calendar allowed LCS to purchase one native pollinator seed packet.

Students packaged the pollinator seeds on Earth Day in April and last week, they delivered these packaged seeds to local neighbourhoods (prioritizing those living in newly developed areas where wildflowers were once abundant).

The goal is that the recipients of these seed packets – our neighbours in Lakefield and Peterborough – will distribute the seeds in their communities so that pollinator-friendly plants can grow and thrive. Our students also aim to promote conversation about the growth and appreciation of native pollinator plants with a focus on local regenerative gardening practices.

Lakefield College School has long held a special interest in bees. Home to over twelve beehives, students at LCS learn how to harvest honey with a focus on regenerative practices. In 2021, we began growing produce at our Northcote campus, which has created many opportunities for our students to be involved in regenerative agriculture and learn about new ways to support the local community.

Since starting our school farm, we have developed a model to send half of the vegetables grown to our dining hall and donate the other half of the harvest to the local community. We also made the intentional decision to only use farming techniques that are meant to improve soil health and produce vegetables free of chemicals. This can only be effective if we are also protecting pollinators, as pollinators play a key role in the health of our food system. On a curricular level, our summer Seed to Table program, as well as the Environmental Science course offered during the school year, both address these topics and have students connect the relationships between pollinator health and food production and availability. When the opportunity to participate in the 24 Good Deeds calendar emerged, a project focused on helping local pollinators seemed like a natural fit.
