Charting an Individualized Learning Path at Lakefield College School

At LCS, we are committed to fostering an educational experience that empowers students to take ownership of their learning. Providing students with the autonomy to chart their own academic paths is key. This approach not only enhances engagement and motivation but also equips students with the decision-making skills they need to succeed in the future.

Our course selection process is designed to encourage students to reflect on their strengths, learning needs, and future aspirations. By being the architects of their own academic journey, students gain a deeper understanding of themselves and what they must do to achieve their goals.

This week, our Grade 9, 10, and 11 students participated in our course fair to learn about class offerings for next year. As they circulated the tables set up in Upper Hadden Hall and The Bryan Jones Theatre, they spoke with faculty to explore their interests and build excitement about the options available to them in the 2023/24 school year. Soon, they will meet with their guidance counsellors for support and guidance so they can make informed course selections for the upcoming academic year. Current Grade 11 students will be invited to a meeting with their guidance counsellor in February, Grade 10 students in March, and Grade 9 students in April. This ensures that all students receive the individualized support they need to make informed decisions.

Our Grade 12 students have been working on their university applications and post-graduation plans with their guidance counsellors since September. Through practising self-reflection, asking questions, and making academic choices, they are developing decision-making skills that align with their individual interests and passions. We believe that this approach not only prepares them for their academic pursuits but also equips them with the skills to be active and engaged members of their community.

We look forward to seeing the choices our students make and the paths they carve out for themselves.
