Athletics Action | Nordic Skiing

This past weekend, the LCS Nordic high-performance team headed to Sudbury along with our partner, the Kawartha Nordic Racing Team, for the latest stop on the Ontario Cup club racing circuit. We were welcomed by Walden Cross Country with heaps of snow, many happy volunteers, and great skiing! The team had an amazing weekend filled with firsts for everyone.

Ali ’24 successfully completed her first 10km classic ski race, a challenging and impressive accomplishment. Louisa ’25, Ben ’25, Gabe ’25, and Rasmus ’26 also completed their first mid-distance classic race at Walden, with Gabe competing on the same 10km course as Ali. The others had a slightly shortened, but still challenging 7.2km course. Evan ’23 placed 2nd in the U18 10km classic ski race (despite starting 28 seconds behind and with eight skiers ahead!). All in all, it was a successful weekend for our team and Ali ’24 summed up her experience by saying, “I had the most amazing time with everyone and feel even more in love with the sport!”

Nordic skiing not only provides our students with the opportunity to engage in an exciting and challenging sport, but it also promotes physical fitness, endurance, mental strength, and teamwork. Skiers must exhibit a high level of focus and concentration as they navigate varying terrain and conditions while maintaining a steady pace. Nordic is also a team sport and it requires skiers to communicate with, support, and encourage one another. Not to mention, it’s a great way to spend time outdoors and enjoy nature. The peacefulness and serenity of skiing through the forest or on a quiet trail can be a great stress reliever and mood booster. It is a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape. For these reasons and more, you may recall that LCS unveiled a five-kilometre racing trail on campus in 2021.

Since its creation, our students have improved their skills through on-campus training, allowing them to compete at higher levels in races at other schools and on other trails. Our trails have also given us the opportunity to host schools at our campus for skiing events of all sizes. Most notably, we will host the 2023 OFSAA Nordic Skiing Championship next month!

We are eager to welcome hundreds of student-athletes from all over the province to compete in this event. We expect to see over 750 student-athletes on our campus, whizzing around our sprint loop and we’re thrilled to partner with Kawartha Nordic to make this event a reality for skiers in Ontario.

This is a great opportunity for our students to showcase their talents and for our school to show its commitment to athletics and the development of our students. We encourage you to come out and support our team and the other athletes competing.
