Thank You!

It is impossible to talk about the Irving Expedition without talking about the impact that Richard Hagg has had on countless students and staff who have been introduced to Canada’s North on this trip.  Since the early 1980s, Mr. Hagg has been the force behind every trip that Lakefield College School has sent to the North, and he has cultivated a great relationship with the Irving family, who have sponsored the trip since its inception.

To put this in context, 35 years ago there were very few people who were paddling Canada’s northern rivers, and to do this with school groups was unheard of.  Not only was Mr. Hagg the logistical mastermind behind each trip, ensuring that food, tents, canoes and numerous planes were in place to allow access to remote rivers, he was also the lead guide and head pancake maker.

Simply put, there would be no Irving Expedition without Mr. Hagg.

Mr. Hagg developed a network of contacts and friends in the Yukon and Northwest Territories that the school uses to this day.  Just as it is impossible to walk into a hockey arena in southern Ontario with a Lakefield College School jacket on and not have someone ask about Ian Armstrong, it is impossible to travel to the north with LCS students and not have someone ask about Richard Hagg.  The 2014 trip to the Keele River marks the last Irving Expedition that Mr. Hagg will head up.

Mr. Hagg, thank you for sharing your love of the north, your paddling expertise, and for helping to open up Canada’s North to the Lakefield College School community.  For this, we should all truly be thankful. - Andrew Johnston
