Thanksgiving Experience

By Jen Horrigan

The start of the school year is a busy time for everyone but luckily the Thanksgiving Break offers a wonderful opportunity to unwind, enjoy the beautiful fall weather and reflect on what we are thankful for.  This Thanksgiving, a group of 13 students experienced a Canadian Thanksgiving extraordinaire when they participated in the Thanksgiving trip.  The trip began with a excursion to Canada’s capital where students were treated to great shopping, great food and a glance at the some of the many tourist attractions in Ottawa.  The Canadian War Museum impressed all trip goers with its wonderful exhibits, real life military vehicles and informative videos.  The students studying Canadian History came away with a deeper understanding of Canada’s contributions in battle and an appreciation for those who fought to create the nation we know today.  No trip to Ottawa would be complete without a tour of Parliament Hill and the Governor General’s residence at Rideau Hall where we had the good fortune to see the Governor General in person. Byward Market provided an excellent taste experience where students could try the Canadian pastry known as a Beavertails as well as choose from numerous restaurants featuring international cuisine.  The group cheered on LCS alum Cody Ceci ’11 and the Ottawa Senators as the took on the Buffalo Sabres in an NHL preseason match up.

After a busy two days in Ottawa, students were happy to relax and enjoy the quiet at Elmhirst Resort on the shores of beautiful Rice Lake.  After a well deserved sleep in, the group got a taste of a famed local attraction when they attended the Norwood Agricultural Fair.  Tractor pulls, horse shows, cattle auctions, deep fried Mars bars and carnival rides were just some of the things seen at the fair which is well known as a Thanksgiving tradition for Eastern Ontario.

On Sunday, students and staff were treated to Thanksgiving dinners with generous LCS families.  Food, family and fun is the best part of Thanksgiving and the opportunity to share a feast and good times was appreciated by all.  Special thanks go out to the Dadds, Harding and Horrigan families who opened up their homes and welcomed a few new faces around the Thanksgiving dinner table.  The food and friendship were equally special.

Monday offered up another busy day with a jam packed trip to Toronto.  Students enjoyed some of the best shopping in North America when they explored the Eaton Centre and Bloor Street shopping areas browsing all their favourite stores.  The afternoon offered a chance to expand their knowledge with a trip to the awesome Rilpley’s Aquarium and the Hockey Hall of Fame.  October in Canada does not only mean Thanksgiving but also the approach of Halloween.  To get into the Halloween spirit, the group travelled to Toronto’s famed Casa Loma for the fantastic Legends of Horror tour.  The brave group explored the grounds which were decorated for the holiday and filled with ghosts and goblins.

A trip to remember with a taste of Canadian culture and a reminder that we all have much to be thankful for.
