A Visit After the Historic Vote

By Jen Horrigan

There is a long tradition of LCS students visiting Gettysburg and Washington, DC but it could be easily be argued that never have students travelled at a more intriguing time.  On November 9, the day after the controversial American election, 24 students and 4 staff members boarded the bus for the ultimate chance to walk in the footsteps of history and experience the thrill of seeing history in the making.

After a an overnight stay and a relaxing evening of shopping at Syracuse's Destiny USA mall. the group arrived in Gettysburg for an amazing tour of the beautiful and historic civil war battlefield. The beauty of the area is undeniable and is in juxtaposition with the solemness of it being the battleground of the deadliest battle in the Civil War.

After viewing the well preserved battle field and the lifelike Cyclorama depicting the famed Pickett's Charge, the group made their way to Washington for the first time. Friday began with the opportunity of a lifetime.  A visit to Arlington National Cemetery is always a moving experience but to be there on Veteran's Day, in the presence of so many who served and seeing President Barack Obama, was a truly surreal experience. The students represented LCS so well as they showed the utmost respect to the many members of the military in attendance and attentively listened to President Obama's memorable remarks. Staff and student alike were in awe of the experience and it will surely be a memory never to be forgot.

Any trip to Washington offers the opportunity to be impressed at every turn.  Whether it was seeing the Lunar Landing Module at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum or realizing the immense size of the Capitol building, “wow!” is a commonly heard exclamation.

As the trip continued, a visit to the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial, photo opportunities at the White House, shopping and great food in Georgetown and a beautiful night tour of the city's numerous Monuments and Memorials offered new highlights each day.

Amongst the historic buildings and sights of Washington, new memories were made a new friendships formed by all who participated in what could clearly be described as the trip of a lifetime.
