Celebrating Saint Nicholas Day

By Jen Horrigan

’Tis the season for all things festive and at LCS everyone was in the spirit for the Saint Nicholas Day festivities hosted by many of our European students.

Although Saint Nicholas Day takes place on a few different days throughout Europe, we honoured them all with a feast that is always one of the year's best.  Students arrived hours in a advance to decorate the dining hall with candies, ornaments, balloons and tinsel while others worked with the Aramark chefs to prepare and cook a menu of schnitzel, red cabbage, authentic potatoes and more.

Judging by the staff and students returning to the buffet for second and third helpings, the food was tasty and the efforts appreciated.  Since the tradition of Saint Nicholas Day sees good children receiving candies, oranges and small toys in their shoes, there were many treats to be found for the good children of LCS.  Chocolates, imported cookies, gummy bears, tangerines and more were enjoyed by all.  Students from around the world got a taste of traditional festive specialties such as the delicious German fruit cake, Stollen.

Sharing foods and traditions from around the world is such a unique benefit to being a part of the LCS community.  Whether students were sharing their memories of Saint Nicholas Day or they were learning about it for the first time, fun was had by all and it was obvious that the holiday season is upon us.
